Art & Sunday Stroll, Food & Friends at Guild Alive this weekend

Guild Park's largest weekend arts & crafts festival returns this weekend (July 27 & 28) for lots of artist displays, live entertainment, plus on-site food and a special walking tour.

Guild Alive With Culture 2024 features more than 150 arts-related exhibitors, the largest number in the event's 17 year history.

Friends of Guild Park will again be at the festival, welcoming our members and park supporters.

We also have activities to help visitors gain an appreciation of 88-acre site - its unique collection of heritage architecture, its legacy of art and its ongoing revitalization as a destination that welcomes the world.

This year, Friends of Guild Park volunteers have organized a series of activities at our booth (Booth #133, near the Bear sculpture) of special interest.

We'll display at Guild Park for the first time the sculpture, The Plastic Drop, by Scarborough artist Jogi Makhani. Jogi was inspired to create his 20-kg acrylic artwork by the Shoreline Cleanups organized by Friends of Guild Park volunteer director, Rose Mitchell Spohn.

Rose provided Jogi with thousands of plastic pieces that she and volunteers have removed from Guild Park's waterfront and vicinity. Jogi then imaginatively transformed this refuse into recycled artwork, standing almost a metre tall.

Guild Alive visitors have two opportunities to meet Jogi at our booth during the festival. He'll be at Booth 133 between noon and 1:00 pm both Saturday and Sunday. Be sure to drop by and chat with this award-winning creator. Many will recall Jogi's popular exhibition last year at Guild Park's Clark Centre for the Arts.

Another special event by Friends of Guild Park during the festival is the "Sunday Stroll" on July 28 starting at 2:00 pm. Friends of Guild Park President, John Mason, will lead a guided walk to see the notable hand-carved sculptures actually created on the grounds during the Guild of All Arts era by resident artists.

Learn the who and the why behind "The Bear",

"St. Francis & the Wolf", "The Mobius Curve" and the often-overlooked portrait of Canada's only "musical knight", Sir Ernest MacMillan.

The tour wraps up by seeing works created by the Guild's last two artists-in-residence, Dorsey James and Elizabeth Fraser Williamson.

Both worked on-site thanks to philanthropists, Rosa and Spencer Clark, founders of the Guild of All Arts.

The 40-minute tour sheds light on Guild Park's importance as a haven and showcase for Canadian art. You can register for this free Sunday Stroll online at https://www.friendsofguildpark.com/event-details/sunday-stroll-at-guild-alive-arts-festival

Also available at the Friends of Guild Park booth during the arts festival are copies of the difficult-to-find book, The History of the Guild Inn, by local writer Carole Lidgold.

Visitors at the Friends of Guild Park booth can check out other Guild-related merchandise, such as vintage post cards and limited edition art prints of the original Guild Inn, signed by the artist, Roy Wright.
