In April, the City will break ground on a new seating area running parallel to the existing path leading to the Sculptor’s Cabin.

Three surplus limestone capitals from the Imperial Oil Building will be repurposed as benches. Each is approximately 3.5 feet long and nearly 2 feet wide, with access from both sides, allowing for 3–5 seating spots per bench. A fourth piece will be placed beneath the main front window of the Sculptor’s Cabin. Together, these additions will provide seating capacity for approximately 12–20 people.

The installation also includes the placement of several remaining bas-relief Richmond Building stones, currently located along Monument Walk. These carved stones—depicting individuals recognized for artistic, literary, scientific, or civic contributions—will be positioned between the benches, helping to define the space, creating a thoughtfully designed area.

This new seating area will:

  • Provide a place for visitors to sit and take in views toward the front of Guild Park, or to observe activity in the Pollinator Garden

  • Improve the usability of the lawn in front of the Sculptor’s Cabin

  • Add much-needed seating to support the Cabin’s role as an informal welcome point and programming hub from spring through fall.

Funding for the project has been generously provided by Councillor Paul Ainslie’s office and the City of Toronto’s Economic Development and Culture Division. The design is a collaboration between the City and Friends of Guild Park.

Scheduled for completion in May, the installation adds another reason to stop and spend time at Guild Park!
