Guild Park Updates and a Poem Inspired by the Place

Writer's picture: John P. MasonJohn P. Mason

For a look at all the rhymes and reflections enjoyed at Guild Park in 2024, check out two articles in the latest fall issue of News & Views, the community newsletter just published by the Guildwood Village Community Association (GVCA).

The articles are written by Friends of Guild Park president, John Mason. To add a touch of humour, one of the stories includes a poem inspired by the summertime poetry reading series hosted at Guild Park (see photo, left).

The series was part of the City of Toronto's Arts in the Parks program and organized by the Toronto poetry group, Tender Possibilities.

Writing the verses and sharing them with the group of poetry fans was, as Mason writes, "a fun way for the budding poets to remember their literary adventures at Guild Park this summer."

Readers of a certain era will recognize the inspiration for the following verse comes from "I Know A Place", the popular Petula Clark hit song from 1965, written by the British tunesmith, Tony Hatch. (Photocomposite below: Facebook-PetulaClarkofficial/photos)

Here are the first few lines

of the Guild Park version:

I Know A Park

Any day when your work is behind you.

And you put a lock on your phone, so you don't get disturbed.

Just head east to the gates of Guild Park.

You'll be surprised when you hit the ’burbs.

Don't pass by, take a look around.

There are trees and art all over the grounds.

You'll be inspired by nature and get all immersed.

Join the writers as they break out in verse,

’cause I tell you...

I know a park,

Where the poets are fine and their words always rhyme.

I know a park made for summertime....
