Discover the Artist Within at Guild Park

What happens when you combine a simple sheet of paper, a little curiosity and the inspiring surroundings of Guild Park?
That's exactly what participants discovered during this week's Hands-on Paper Sculpture Workshop, part of Friends of Guild Park's New Horizons for Seniors Program.
The morning began outdoors around Guild Park's Clark Centre for the Arts, where participants were encouraged to slow down and really look at the world around them.
Framing the landscape with their fingers, they explored the park's remarkable architecture, gardens and natural landscape from fresh perspectives.
It was a simple exercise -- but one that changed how people observed the world around them.
Back inside the studio, artist Carol Knowlton-Dority introduced a series of surprisingly simple techniques for folding, cutting, shaping and even crumpling paper.
At first, participants worked with ordinary sheets of paper.
Within minutes, those same sheets began taking on new forms filled with movement, texture and imagination. Every sculpture reflected its creator's own ideas and way of seeing. During the workshop, participants focused their attention and creativity to turn ordinary paper into different shapes and forms.
There were no "right" or "wrong" answers. Instead, the workshop encouraged participants to experiment, explore and enjoy the creative process.
One of the highlights of the morning was watching a large paper sculpture emerge from techniques that had seemed almost effortless.
It was a wonderful reminder that creativity often begins with simple ideas and the willingness to try something new.
Perhaps the greatest lesson of the morning was that creativity isn't about being an artist. It's about learning to notice details, seeing familiar things in new ways and discovering that everyone has the ability to create.

The workshop is free for adults aged 55+, thanks to funding from the Government of Canada's New Horizons for Seniors Program.
