What's eating The Bear at Guild Park?
Sharp-eyed, long-time Guild Park vistors have noticed that "The Bear", like other sculpted attractions on the grounds, is looking less vibrant.
This popular limestone sculpture, carved by hand and air tools by Canadian sculptors, E.B. Cox and Michael Clay, shows there's a problem with park's collection of public art on display year-round outdoors.

Guild Park visitors are surprised to learn that what looks like dirt on this white limestone figure is actual much more ... and much worse.
Under the grime is a microscopic organism that's damaging this massive artwork. It's been slowing happening in the 45 years since The Bear was created at Guild Park from a 15 ton block of Portland limestone. And The Bear isn't alone. There are other works on-site in Public art collection that also require attention after decades of weathering and exposure.
